Boats and Jet Ski - Sailing

What is Sailing?

Sailing is a means of getting along using the wind to provide motion via sails or kites. The wind is used to propel the craft forward to its destination. The boat sizes vary from tiny, you can even wind surf to bigger luxury yachts that can travel great distances, and have full accommodation onboard.

In the old days sailing was the only way to get across oceans and seas, so it developed from basic square sails to more sophisticated multi sail designs over the years. Today sailing is mostly done with a triangular sail; however there are many variants out there that focus on performance or ease of use. In racing the sail shapes and sizes are regulated, to ensure a more level playing field.

Today sailing is mostly a recreational activity with two main types, racing and cruising. Racing is something more like you see in the Olympics, and cruising is what people do for their leisure activities on holidays and weekends.

Learning to sail only takes a few days, provided you have tuition and a basic understanding of how it works. This is an easy sport to pick up, provided the conditions are right, mild winds are perfect for beginners.

Sailing is a great sport for all ages, with children as young as 9 and older gentlemen aged 90 can enjoy sailing.

There are many places where you can go sailing in the UK, with sea being all around, it is very easy to find a place to try. You can also try sailing while abroad on a sea holiday, as there are many places that offer to try sailing or to even go on sailing trips around islands or to different towns.
