The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles will not reopen its customer service center in Smithfield at the existing location, according to an agency spokesperson.

The 912 S. Church St. location was closed in March along with the 74 other service centers in the state to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Spokesperson Jessica Cowardin said the DMV has been considering moving to a larger facility in the Smithfield area for years to increase service capacity.

“During the pandemic, health and safety concerns due to the inability to properly social distance and the lack of a public restroom at the current location have accelerated DMV’s pursuit of a new location,” Cowardin wrote in an email Wednesday.

The new location has not been released, but Cowardin said the department was working to open the new location “as soon as possible.”

The DMV offers online services like renewals for licenses, identification cars and vehicle registrations. There are mail-in options available for title transactions and some driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals.

Customers who need in-person services can make an appointment at DMV service centers in Hampton or Portsmouth.
